I’m excited to finally share that I’ve joined I’m excited to finally share that I’ve joined re:power, one of the progressive movement’s largest training and leadership development organizations as their new Managing Director of Strategic Initiatives. In this newly created position, I’ll have the opportunity to implement re:power’s bold/visionary strategic plan while also creating dope partnerships and initiatives across the movement. Most importantly, as a Black-led organization with an all womxn of color leadership team, I’ll get to work with some of the most brilliant folks in the movement and create even more impact. After spending a week with the full team recently, I have never felt so welcomed, and having been a trainer since 2018, it feels like coming home. After losing my election, I began coaching and con After losing my election, I began coaching and consulting with other candidates running for office at the state and local levels. After losing my election, I remained in politics, After losing my election, I remained in politics, including running one of Detroit’s largest IE’s for the Clinton campaign in ‘16. I thought I had a plan. Hillary was going to win, I’d travel, and run again in 2018. One day I saw a FB ad that read, “Do you want to travel the world and work remotely?” Hell yes. I applied to Remote Year and within days was paying a deposit to live in 12 countries in 12 months across SE Asia, Europe, and South America. I quietly started to untangle my life. I ended a relationship, began selling everything, and bought a one-way ticket to Kuala Lumpur. After Clinton lost, an escape from America was exactly what my soul needed. Quitting my job was the most liberating experience of my life. I wasn’t just going to be traveling the world. I’d be healing from a year of losses, coming out to the world as queer, and for the first time, I was unencumbered by anyone else’s definition of what it meant to be me. One week after moving to KL, as I came back from my morning hike, I started getting bombarded with messages. So many that at first, I thought someone had died. My opponent was stepping down, suddenly opening up the seat that I narrowly lost just 2 years before. Elected officials were asking me to come home and run in a special election. I sat on my bathroom floor and cried. The one thing I thought I wanted was suddenly available and according to some, the seat was mine. But deep in my soul, I knew the Universe had other plans for me. I knew that my life’s calling was so much bigger than one district and that if I bet on myself again this time, I couldn’t lose. And I was right. I’d go on to live in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Serbia before coming back to lead one the largest candidate recruitment/training program in the country. I still remember it like it was yesterday. I woke I still remember it like it was yesterday. I woke up on the morning of August 5, 2014 to a rainy day in Detroit and a feeling deep in the pit of my stomach that I wasn’t going to win. I was one of the first people to vote at my polling location and I waited. And waited. And the voters were few and far between. I drove to every single polling location and turnout was low. Despite personally knocking on every door 4 times, activating 600+ volunteers, and raising $80k+, I lost by just 6 votes on Election Day.  I went into a deep depression and didn’t get off my couch for 6 months. I re-watched every episode of The Wire (kinda funny how I live in West Baltimore now) and completely checked out of what was happening in the world around me. What I know for sure is that I was SUPPOSED to lose that election.  It would fortify me for fights I couldn’t even see coming, introduce my name to thousands of people across the country, and remind me that I can consistently do hard things. Since then, I’ve helped train, coach, and support candidates, campaigns, and elected officials at every level of the ballot and have had a front-row seat to some of the most exciting races in the country.  Now I’m excited to take everything I’ve learned the hard way and share it with other Black womxn candidates, campaign managers, and operatives on Thursday, August 15 at 7pm ET in my brand new FREE Masterclass, “Run and Win the First Time”.
